Hope College Formula Racing earned 11th place overall out of the 108 teams that participated in the Formula SAE competition held at Michigan International Speedway on Wednesday-Saturday, May 8-11.

The new Milestone Weekend at Hope College will provide an opportunity to experience talks by alumni and faculty on topics ranging from mountain climbing around the world, to human services in South Africa, to brain-regeneration research at Hope, as well as campus tours and updates about the college.

Dr. Sander de Haan, who retired from Hope as a professor of German and Dutch in 2018 after nearly 40 years on the faculty, died on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, after a long battle with Alzheimer鈥檚 disease. He was 78.

Approximately 680 graduating seniors participated in the ceremony, held on Sunday, May 5 at Ray and Sue Smith Stadium. The class consisted of students from across the United States and around the world.

A total of 63 of Hope College鈥檚 graduating seniors and recent graduates have been initiated into the college鈥檚 Zeta of Michigan chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation鈥檚 oldest scholastic honorary society.

With Hope College鈥檚 Commencement marking both an ending and a beginning for the Class of 2024, featured speaker the Rev. Shomari Tate reflected on four lessons revealed by Christ鈥檚 life, sacrificial death and the transformational beginning that Jesus made possible.

Dr. Kenneth Brown, who is the John H. and Jeanne M. Professor of Chemistry at Hope College, has been named the 2024 recipient of the college鈥檚 annual Vanderbush-Weller Award for having a strong, positive impact on students.

Representing departments across the college, the 12 staff members retiring this year have devoted a combined 250 years-plus to doing the essential work of keeping Hope running 鈥� the computers and vehicles, the offices and programs 鈥� and the campus a welcoming, safe, clean and even homelike place for students, faculty, staff and visitors.

A ceremony at Hope College on Saturday, April 27, will celebrate the college鈥檚 first two international graduates, who arrived from Japan in 1871, and their lasting, 153-year impact on both Hope and their homeland.

Hope College TRIO Upward Bound is the longest-running Upward Bound program at a private college in the country. Its 55th Anniversary Gala: Living Legacies on April 12, however, will not be about longevity but instead will focus on the thousands of lives that have been transformed.
